SINGAPORE – A 40-year-old man was arrested for public nuisance after he allegedly assaulted a cleaner and five parkgoers at Punggol Park on Wednesday morning.

A park worker told Shin Min Daily News that the man is about 1.8m tall and has a strong build.

According to the worker, the man followed a park cleaner, who is in his 70s, to the public toilet. They reportedly broke into a fight after the cleaner told the man off for interrupting his work.

Five parkgoers, including an 86-year-old man and four women, heard the commotion and tried to approach the pair to break up the fight. But they were also hit by the man, who was throwing punches in all directions, said the eyewitness.

“(The man) was hurling vulgarities at everyone, punching them and waving his hands. I did not touch him but I went near him to tell him to stop the fight,” said another passer-by who helped break up the fight.

“He lost his balance and I held his legs so he couldn’t run while another person sat on his back. Three to four of us pinned him to the ground and made sure he could not get up until the police came,” added the passer-by, who did not want to be named.

In response to The Straits Times’ query, Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and the police said they received a call for assistance at about 8am.

A 71-year-old man was taken conscious to the hospital. A 48-year-old man and two women, aged 41 and 58, sustained minor injuries, the police said.

Investigations are ongoing.
