ITALY – The thought of going on a cruise typically conjures images of sharing your holiday with a few thousand other people in what is basically a floating hotel.

But while the average capacity of these vessels is about 3,000 passengers, with a growing number able to handle more than 5,000, there is a segment of the market occupied by smaller ships offering a very different experience.
