All hybrids use an internal-combustion engine (ICE) as the main driving unit, but there are essentially three different types.

The hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) can be driven by its electric motor for short distances. When operating together with the engine, the motor provides a useful torque boost – particularly during mid-range acceleration or when moving off from rest. Its battery is recharged when the car is coasting or braking.
