KINMEN, Taiwan – Every morning, a three-storey loudspeaker in Taiwan’s Kinmen archipelago broadcasts a message across the water towards the Chinese city of Xiamen.

“Dear compatriots in mainland China, I am Teresa Teng,” begins the recorded message by the late Taiwanese singer.
