Beijing asserts maritime claim after Kinmen fishermen deaths but escalation unlikely: Analysts

BEIJING/TAIPEI – China has attempted to assert greater control over the Taiwan Strait near the Taipei-ruled Kinmen islands, after an incident last week that left two Chinese fishermen dead.

But the risk of this incident escalating into a serious conflict appears low for now, given that both Beijing and Taipei do not wish to see such an outcome, analysts said.
